Courtney Danser

I am a senior from Hamilton, New Jersey, majoring in Actuarial Science and minoring in Economics. This summer I was a consulting intern with Ernst & Young, and the summer before that I was a pension intern with Prudential. I plan to work full-time in Ernst & Young’s New York City office post-graduation. I decided on my career path after realizing my favorite classes in high school were all mathematics. Actuaries play a huge role in the corporate world, making high-level business decisions and solving problems using math, probability, and statistics. If you want to be an actuary, UConn is an incredible choice for your degree! Our program prepares you for your career and sets you up with connections to help you get internships and full-time jobs. Along with the overall campus life and strong school spirit (Go Huskies!), the actuarial science program is a main reason I chose UConn!

Outside of academics, I enjoy various activities such as running, hiking, going to the Jersey Shore, and spending time with my friends. I am also extremely competitive, and really love lawn games and board games! At UConn, I have an on-campus job with the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department. I also participate in HuskyTHON and the Economics Society. My favorite memory at UConn is attending football and basketball games.

I look forward to (virtually) meeting all of our new members and am hoping to make this a great year! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or even if you would just like to chat!

Peter Kunz

Executive Vice President

Hi everyone! I’m a senior from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts (right outside of Worcester) graduating in December 2020. I’m studying actuarial science because I love solving problems using math, but I’ve always had a passion for teaching others and helping out; in my free time you can find me running the Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter on campus or volunteering as a Day Leader with the Windham Heights Afterschool program! I’ve had three different internship experiences so far: at Oliver Wyman doing Life Consulting, at the Connecticut Insurance Department doing regulation work, and at Prudential Financial doing annuities pricing. As a result, I’m going to be working full time at Prudential starting in 2021. I’m so glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to be here at UConn because the program, people, and experiences have all been absolutely phenomenal, and you made an excellent choice to study here!

If you have any questions about any of my experiences or anything else, please feel free to reach out and I would love to help you and get to know you!

Mark Perla

Chief Financial Officer

I am a junior from Haverhill, MA majoring in Actuarial Science. I always loved math growing up and when I heard about the actuarial program UConn had, I knew it would be perfect for me. The curriculum and opportunities here are unlike anywhere else. Other than UAS, I am also a Husky Ambassador and I highly recommend people to join. It’s a great way to show off our school and program. I love soccer, tennis, and skiing but am also down to play any sport. In my free time I like to go to the music building and play the piano. I’m really looking forward to this semester and hope to keep UAS exciting for everyone. Feel free to ask me any questions or set up a chat!

I am a junior majoring in Actuarial Science – Finance. I grew up in Storrs, CT about 5 minutes from campus. Last summer I interned at Cigna, and the summer before that I interned at Milliman’s Hartford Health practice. I chose to major in Actuarial science at UConn because of the immense amount of resources and opportunities offered here, everyone wants to see you succeed, especially in UAS! I am also involved in Her Campus, Husky Ambassadors, and Math Motivators. Last semester I (partially) studied abroad in Florence, Italy. Please feel free to contact me or the UAS email if you have any questions or ever want to chat. I’m looking forward to a great semester!

I am a junior Actuarial Science – Finance major and Statistics minor from Hermon, ME. I chose Actuarial Science because I wanted a career that combined math and finance. UConn was then the obvious choice. This past summer I enjoyed an internship at Milliman’s Hartford Health practice. Outside of academics and UAS, I am a tutor for Math Motivators, an Actuarial Science mentor for UConn’s TME program, and the Vice President of the UConn Club Soccer team. I love to watch and play pretty much any sport. Feel free to reach out with any questions or if you just want to chat. Get ready for a great year with UAS!

I am a senior from Southwest Harbor, Maine (right next to Bar Harbor), majoring in Actuarial Science – Finance. I was interested in actuarial science as I loved math and statistics in high school. In the summer after my sophomore year, I interned at ConnectiCare in Farmington, CT. This past summer, I had a remote internship with The Hartford. I accepted a full-time offer with The Hartford beginning June 2021 in the Hartford, CT office!

My favorite UAS event is always the Welcome Back BBQ, where we get to meet new members, but unfortunately that couldn’t happen this year. Outside of actuarial science, I am an Assistant Director of the UConn Film Club, the largest branch of UCTV. I love soccer and college basketball, producing music, and playing board or video games.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out! Please let me know if you have any suggestions for this website.

Taylor Schellhorn

I am a junior majoring in Actuarial Science from Doylestown, Pennsylvania.  This past summer I interned at Amica Life on the reserving team working specifically for the valuation actuary. Also, during this school year I am working as an intern for the UConn Baseball team completing some projects on their statistics relative to the game. I am excited to serve this year as a Co- Vice President of Public Relations and can’t wait to run our High School Outreach Program.

Co-Vice President of Social Events

I am a senior from Burlington, NJ majoring in Actuarial Science with a minor in Hebrew and Judaic Studies. In the spring of 2020 I was abroad at Tel Aviv University where I further studied Hebrew. I have interned at UnitedHealthcare and Milliman and I will be continuing my actuarial career at UnitedHealthcare upon graduating.

I chose actuarial science after attending a weeklong camp at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania where I was able to see the responsibilities and workload of actuaries across the industry.

On campus, I work as a mathematics and statistics tutor at the Q Center. My hobbies include riding my motorcycle and bicycle, as well as playing video games such as Rocket League. Feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions or want to chat!

Abby Kirk

Co-Director of Diversity and Inclusion

I’m a sophomore, pursuing an Actuarial Science degree with a minor in statistics, and I’m from Woodbury, Connecticut! I chose Actuarial Science because I love math and problem solving, so I wanted a challenging career that would allow me to be both creative and logical. This past summer, I along with my friend Efua had the pleasure of creating this position within UAS as a way to promote diversity and inclusion. I also had the opportunity to take Linear Algebra and participate in a case competition for Slalom Consulting (sponsored by UConn’s CLE program).

In addition to UAS, I’m involved in several clubs including Bad Movie Club and Horticulture Club. So far, my favorite non-Actuarial Science related course has been World Regional Geography. I really appreciate all the different lenses geography focuses on; for example, through applying areas, such as climatology and topography, I can gain a better understanding of the economic growth and development of certain regions in the world. Outside of UConn I love training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It has taught me so much about how to problem solve in difficult situations. I am always available to answer any questions or engage in discourse on diversity and inclusion efforts in UAS or just in general. Please feel free to reach out!

Efua Koomson

Co-Director of Diversity and Inclusion

I am a Junior from East Hartford, Connecticut pursuing a major in Actuarial Science and a minor in Statistics. On campus, I’ve been involved as a student leader through my time as a UNIV Facilitator and now an Honors GPS! I enjoy meeting new people, giving advice, and learning about different student experiences. This semester, I forward to cultivating an inclusive and welcoming UConn community as President of UConn Honors for Diversity. I’m very passionate about this topic, especially in the insurance and healthcare industry. It’s important to me that everyone feels welcomed and supported. That’s one of the reasons I chose UConn because the professors and my advisor (Trimble) always support the students in every aspect.

Outside of these interests, in my personal time, I enjoy watching tennis, sunsets, and listening to music. Feel to reach out to me if you need any assistance… or just want to share your favorite playlists!

Jeremy Bernier

Annika Haerle

Co-Director of Professional Development

I am a junior studying actuarial science, and am a co-director of professional development. I am looking forward to helping plan events to help our members to grow their skills. After my internship was cancelled this summer, I participated in a GIS project based internship, researching schools that GIS could expand into. I’m also a member of the UConn dance company and I tutor for math motivators. My favorite UAS memory was Gamma Cabin my freshman year, as it gave me a chance to bond with the other members. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or ideas, can’t wait to meet our new members!

Shawn Brown

Director of Alumni Relations

I am a junior majoring in Actuarial Science from Burlington MA. This past summer I interned with Hanover Insurance. The reason I fell in love with Actuarial Science is because it is such a strong field. It shows a competency in Mathematics and many other categories including finance and economics which make career decisions down the road a lot more flexible. I knew UConn was the place to be once I toured the campus and I still feel the same today. Not many other universities do things quite like UConn. Outside of the actuarial community, I am involved with the Math Motivators tutoring program and the UConn Chess Club.

Marisa Anderson

Co-Director of Fundraising

I am a Junior majoring in Actuarial Science from Rocky Hill, CT, graduating in May of 2022. Math has always been my strongest subject all throughout my years of schooling, so I decided that Actuarial Science would be a good career for me to pursue. This past summer I worked at ConnectiCare in Farmington, CT, which is a health insurance company. Throughout my summer, I collaborated with their Valuation team, working specifically with reserves, which was very interesting to learn and be a part of. Aside from being a member of UAS, I am also involved in Math Motivators on campus, which is a tutoring group geared to help middle school and high school inner-city students progress in their math skills. It is a really great program to be a member of, and it is super rewarding to be a mentor for all of the students.

I have been a member of UAS since the spring semester of my Freshman year back in 2019, and I am very excited to have became an officer this year. I am looking forward to coordinating fundraising activities for the club, and I hope to another great year with everyone!
